What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are a procedure where a solution is applied to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.
There are 3 types of peels: superficial, medium and deep. Each peel addresses specific skin concerns and varies in its active ingredients and depth of penetration.
Superficial Peels: These peels use mild acids, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of skin. They are effective for treating minor discoloration, rough texture, and mild sun damage.
Medium Peels: Medium-depth peels utilise stronger acids, like glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), to target deeper layers of the skin. They can help improve moderate wrinkles, acne scars, and more pronounced pigmentation issues.
Deep Peels: Deep peels involve potent acids, like phenol, and penetrate the skin’s deepest layers. They treat severe wrinkles, deep scars, and substantial sun damage. Deep peels require longer recovery periods and are typically performed under anesthesia.
Do we offer chemical peels in our clinics in Birmingham?
Yes! We use the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance Facial in clinic which is very popular. The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance Facial is a quick, superficial salicylic acid-based facial peel that exfoliates and helps improve overall complexion. Dr Randhawa performs them and their aim is to improve skin texture, tone, and clarity. It can address concerns like uneven pigmentation, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and mild acne scars. Dr Randhawa adjusts the peel’s intensity based on the individual’s needs, making it suitable for all skin types.
Can you do chemical peels at home?
No, they are best performed in a clean, clinical setting. Dr Randhawa, our skincare lead performs them in clinic. Due to the concentration of the acids in the peel, she will observe you closely for any reactions. Often, chemical peels that have gone wrong are not performed by an experienced clinician.
What are the benefits of the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance Facial?
It is great at improving fine lines and wrinkles, rough uneven skin, blemishes, acne breakouts, acne scars and signs of photoageing.

How do chemical peels work?
The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance Facial incorporates a blend of active ingredients that work synergistically to rejuvenate the skin:
Salicylic Acid: This beta hydroxy acid (BHA) is oil-soluble and has exfoliating properties. It penetrates the pores, helping to unclog them and remove dead skin cells. This can result in a smoother complexion and reduced appearance of acne.
Glycolic Acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), glycolic acid works to exfoliate the outermost layer of skin, promoting cell turnover. It can improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and enhance overall radiance.
Lactic Acid: Another AHA, lactic acid assists in gentle exfoliation and helps retain moisture in the skin. It can improve the appearance of dull, dry skin and contribute to a more even skin tone.
These ingredients collectively facilitate the removal of dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new, healthier skin. By shedding the outer layers, these acids can help minimize the appearance of fine lines, improve skin texture, and enhance overall clarity. The chemical exfoliation process triggered by these ingredients also promotes the production of collagen, which contributes to skin firmness and elasticity.
The combination of salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids in the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance facial provides a comprehensive approach to skin rejuvenation, offering noticeable improvements in texture, tone, and radiance.
How many will I need?
The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance facial provides tighter, smoother, brighter-looking skin after just 1 use so many clients like to use this before a special occasion to give their skin a lovely glow. However, a series of 4 – 6 peels provides the best results.
What preparation should you do before chemical peels?
Before undergoing an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance facial, there are specific precautions you should take to ensure the best possible results:
Sun Exposure: Avoid excessive sun exposure for at least two weeks before the peel. Sunburned or heavily tanned skin can react negatively to the treatment.
Skincare Products: Discontinue using products containing retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and other exfoliating agents for 3-5 days before the peel.
Waxing and Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, electrolysis, or any other forms of hair removal in the treatment area for a week before the peel.
Can I have a chemical peel in the summer?
We do not recommend you have a chemical peel during the summer, especially if you will spend lots of time in the sun. Chemical peels can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays, and sun exposure immediately after a peel can increase the risk of sunburn and pigmentation. It is usually better to have a chemical peel during the winter when there is less sun and you can protect your skin more easily.
What will happen during the procedure?
1. Cleansing: Dr Randhawa will thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove any makeup, dirt, or impurities, ensuring a clean surface for the peel.
2. Prepping: She will apply a prepping solution to the skin to further cleanse and degrease it, optimizing the penetration of the peel solution.
3. Peel Application: She will evenly apply the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance solution to the face. which contains a blend of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acid, This solution works to exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin.
4. Monitoring: She will monitor the skin’s response to the peel, adjusting the application time if necessary. This step ensures that the peel’s intensity is appropriate for the individual’s skin type and concerns.
5. Neutralisation: Once she achieves the desired level of exfoliation, Dr Randhawa will neutralise the peel using a specialised solution. This stops the exfoliation process and prepares the skin for the next steps.
6. Moisturisation: She will apply a soothing moisturiser to the treated skin to help alleviate any temporary redness or discomfort.
7. Sun Protection: Finally she puts on a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the newly exposed skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. This step is crucial to prevent sun damage and maintain the results of the peel.
What does a chemical peel feel like?
Clients describe the sensation of an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance facial as a mild tingling or warmth on the skin. As Dr Randhawa applies the peel solution, you may feel a gentle sensation as it starts to work. Are there any side effects?
It has minimal downtime and side effects; it is often described as a ‘lunchtime peel’ for this reason. However, here are the most common side effects to be aware of:
Redness: Some temporary redness or flushing of the skin is common immediately after the peel. This usually subsides within a few hours to a day.
Peeling: As the name suggests, peeling or flaking of the treated skin is expected. This can vary in intensity and duration based on the individual’s skin type and the peel’s strength.
Sensitivity: Treated skin might become more sensitive to various skincare products, environmental factors, and sun exposure during the healing period.
Dryness: Your skin may experience dryness or tightness, especially during the initial days following the peel.
What is the aftercare advice for chemical peels?
After undergoing an Obagi Blue Peel Radiance facial, actively engage in proper aftercare to support healing and achieve optimal results.
Cleanse your face gently using a mild, non-abrasive cleanser to maintain cleanliness without causing irritation. Keep your skin well-moisturized with a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to counteract potential dryness or flakiness that might arise after the peel.
Prioritize sun protection by consistently applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This shields your skin from harmful UV rays and helps prevent the development of new pigmentation issues. Minimize sun exposure, particularly during peak hours, and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses when outside for added defence.
Refrain from using harsh skincare products such as exfoliants, retinoids, and potent acids for approximately a week post-peel. Avoid the temptation to scrub or pick at flaking skin; instead, allow it to naturally slough off to reveal the refreshed skin beneath.
Be cautious around heat sources like saunas, hot tubs, and very hot showers for a few days after the peel, as heat can intensify irritation. Additionally, skip makeup application for at least 24 hours to allow your skin to heal effectively. Staying well-hydrated by drinking ample water also supports overall healing and skin recovery.
